Tool Tax

Wispr Flow: the one tool I'm not cutting

Most of Tool Tax is about cancelling AI subscriptions that overlap. Wispr Flow doesn't overlap with anything. It's voice dictation that works in any app, and it makes the AI tools you already pay for more useful.

The short version

Wispr Flow turns what you say into clean, punctuated text wherever your cursor is, on Mac, Windows, iPhone and Android. If you use AI chat tools most days, it's the cheapest way I know to get better answers out of them, because you'll give them more context. The free plan covers 2,000 words a week on desktop with no card required, which is enough to find out whether it sticks.

What it does

Wispr says Flow is "4x faster than your keyboard," citing 220 words a minute spoken against 45 typed. The typing half matches me: when I installed Flow, it measured my typing at 40 to 50 words a minute. The 220 is their figure, not mine. Time yourself on a real prompt and see.

Why it matters for AI tools

What you get back from an AI tool depends on how much you tell it. Typing a long prompt is slow, so most people don't. They type one line and get a generic answer.

I use Flow for most of the prompts I write. Talking, I give the model the background I'd skip if I were typing: who it's for, what I've already tried, what a good answer looks like. The first answer needs less fixing.
